Food security is an essential aspect of women’s empowerment. Satisfying one’s right to food is a critical livelihoods outcome in itself, as expressed by MDG 1. Further, it is a necessary pre-condition to achievement of other fundamental rights; women and children who are hungry cannot readily satisfy their rights to health or education, or take up leadership roles.London Meeting of the Food Security Advisory Group: February 2009 Following the presentation of CARE's Agenda for Action at the Global Conference in 2008, in February 2009 CARE UK hosted a meeting of CARE's Food Security Advisory Group and respresentatives of Country Offices and Regional Management Units. It seeks to provide a coherent framework for CARE's role in responding to global food insecurity. By providing an overview of the current situation and highlighting CARE's added value and areas of specialization we hope to lay the foundations for guiding further developments in food security programming, advocacy, communications and learning across the organization and to locate food security firmly within our broader program strategy. It is hoped that this opening consultation will lead to the development of a formal strategy and an organizational commitment to a global food security strategy. |
